A Steam Separator, sometimes referred to as a flash druma, moisture separator or steam drier, is a device for separating water droplets from steam. Wet steam can lead to problems like water hammer and corrosion which in turn can damage costly equipment like flowmeters, control valves, effectively remove moisture from steam ensuring the highest dryness fraction at the outlet. In other industrial machinery that uses steam, water can build up in pipes and cause steam hammer: a form of water hammer is when water builds up "clogging" a pipe, which is then accelerated by steam flowing through the pipe until it reaches a Sharp turns, leading to catastrophic failure of the pipeline. Vertical separators are generally used when the gas-liquid ratio is high or gas volumes are high. Horizontal separators are used where large volumes of liquid are involved
